Here, you can buy hand-crafted “Temari balls“, Japanese traditional embroidered balls. Ones I make use warm-colored threads, instead of vivid tones. 

At our home, Temari balls are the family tradition, culture, art form handed down from my grand mother to my mother, from my mother to me. I sincerely hope many of you would enjoy this tradition too.

Little story and background: Temari balls were originally toys from ancient days in Japan. At the beginning, they were simple balls made of inner cores wrapped around by plain-colored threads. Elaborate, geometric patterns and designs apparently emerged from the late 16th century.

祖母から母、母から私に譲り受けた手毬という文化を少しでも多くの方に楽しんでもらえることを願っています。

手まりは、日本に古くからあるおもちゃの一つです。当初は、芯に糸を巻いただけの物でしたが、16世紀末頃より、芯にぜんまい綿などを巻き弾性の高い球体を作り、それを美しい糸で幾何学模様に巻いて作られるようになりました。

近年では、おもちゃとして遊ばれる事は少なくなり、伝統工芸品の手まりが装飾品として喜ばれています。
